Painting in West Hempstead

This is the church of St. Thomas the Apostle in West Hempstead. I did an 8"x10" plein air oil painting of the church from a nice shady spot across the street. I'll post the painting tomorrow.

Painting a gothic revival door

This is a door I painted from life at a cathedral in Garden City. The left is my drawing done with Van Dyk Brown diluted with turpenoid. The right is about an hour and fifteen minutes into the painting.

Plein air in Garden City

I have been painting on canvas boards, but I found a bunch of Masonite panels in my studio. This sketch is on Masonite prepared with gesso. I don't know if I like it more than a canvas panel, but I do think it allows me to paint a little looser, which is a good thing for me.

I found this nice building near the Cathedral of the Incarnation in Garden City, Long Island.

An oil portrait of Teddy

My dog just got a haircut and he looked so dapper that I had to do a small oil portrait of him. This is a photo of him inspecting the painting. He likes it.

An old abandoned truck in New Hampshire

I have been painting oils lately accidentally ignoring watercolors. Watercolors are my first love and I am now trying to go back to them. I want to keep painting oils plein air so I now have been painting watercolors in the studio.

I did a plein air oil painting of this same subject when I was in New Hampshire and I was very happy with it. I also took a Polaroid photo of the same scene, so I decided to use the photo and the oil painting as reference.

I am happy with this painting and I'm happy to be back to watercolors.
